A Kitchen-Table Card Game Built for Ages 6 and Up

18 August 2026 · UNKNOWNFUNCTION

Wireburn started so we could pass an old family card game to our six-year-old before the tradition faded. First prototype was a plain deck. Then one hand-cut copy. Then printed versions, new art, and too many rules.

That version flopped. Scorekeeping. Rule bloat. The table stopped asking to play it.

We stripped it back and rebuilt the game around three shared docks. Colour you can see. Numbers you can call. No ledger. That version felt finished.

What stayed

Ages 6 and up is not a marketing line. Sequence play is visual. You are matching colour and value, or matching a number. Kids read the docks. Adults start looking for the NULL.

2-6 players. 20-40 minutes. 62 cards in the box. Designed at a kitchen table on the NSW South Coast and published by UNKNOWNFUNCTION as Wireburnthegame.

What we had to invent

Pacing was the hard problem. Games ended on the first lucky empty hand, or they never ended. NULL was either useless or nuclear. Final Firewall is the rule that made both problems sit down. Empty the hand, then survive a round. No instant wins. No dead players watching from the couch.

The digital twin came after. Same rules, running free in the browser, so a family can try a round before they buy the cardboard.

Where it lives now

Physical deck, RRP $28.99 AUD, free shipping Australia-wide. Browser table at /app/. If you want a game night that a six-year-old and a rules-lawyer can share without a lecture, this is the deck we kept.
